Emmanuel Rampersaud

17-month-old Emmanuel Rampersaud was born with Anorectal Malformation (Imperforated Anus/No Anal Opening). Surgery was done at birth to place a Colostomy at his right abdomen, allowing stool to pass into a bag. However, the opening has recurring infections causing Emmanuel severe discomfort.

SHEA Charity accepted Emmanuel’s case on June 19, 2019, and we have begun the process of securing advanced medical treatment for him in the United States, since treatment to reverse this condition is possible here.

Emmanuel departed Guyana on November 25, 2019, accompanied by his mother, where Emmanuel will begin treatment on Wednesday, November 27. He will remain in treatment for approximately 15-25 weeks in the US.

Update: April 9, 2020
Since his arrival, Emmanuel has had several major surgeries (some lasting 3 - 9 hours). Yesterday he had his ileostomy takedown surgery, which is one of the final major surgeries in the treatment process. Stool will now pass through the new coloanal anastomosis, rather than the Colostomy at his right abdomen. He is now in recovery and doing well.

Emmanuel will still needs to have some minor surgeries to complete this process, but he is well on his way to a complete recovery.

Update: July 28, 2020
Emmanuel completed all treatment services and returned to Guyana on July 28, 2020. He is now able to pass stool normally and will not require wearing any tubes!
