Rodas Lakhan

June 3, 2024

The case of Rodas Lakhan has touched many hearts globally.  At just 3 weeks old, Rodas was diagnosed with a cyanotic congenital heart defect, requiring urgent surgery to save his life. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of his diagnosis, he could not be treated in Guyana, and despite his doctors efforts, his condition continued to get worse.

Thankfully, SHEA Charity was able to coordinate a medical transfer for Rodas to travel Suriname, where he underwent a temporary PTCA Stent procedure. This procedure was imperative in buying time for Rodas while we worked on procuring the advanced treatment needed. He was subsequently accepted for treatment at the Hospital for SickKids in Toronto, Canada, and he was transferred to the facility in November 2021.

His treatment plan was devised in two parts, where the first phase of treatment was done in December 2021, and the second phase scheduled for June 2022. However, due to extensive backlog of treatment caused by the covid pandemic, Rodas’s treatment was put on hold indefinitely.

Fortunately, in April of 2024, an opportunity was presented for Rodas to return to SickKids to complete his treatment.  Our team quickly mobilized and arranged his return to Toronto, where Rodas underwent open heart surgery on April 25, 2024, the final phase of his treatment.

We are overjoyed to share that Rodas’s surgery was a huge success. He has since progressed remarkably well and has now completed his cardiac treatment. With his devoted mother by his side through this incredible journey, Rodas will now return home to Guyana.

This miraculous transformation was made possible by your generous donations and unwavering support for SHEA Charity. Thank you for giving the gift of life to this child. Please continue supporting SHEA so that we can help more children like him.

Special thanks to our dedicated volunteers, Sita Sugrim and Shameer Bacchus, for managing this case and for helping to save Rodas.

SHEA Charity has received an urgent request to assist 23-day-old, Rodas Lakhan, with emergency medical services.

Baby Rodas is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), Pediatric Cardiology Clinic. He is diagnosed with a cyanotic congenital heart defect - Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia.  This defect requires urgent surgical intervention which is not currently available in Guyana.

Despite his doctors’ incredible efforts to treat Rodas, his condition is getting worse as time passes.  Therefore, time is of the essence, and we need your help to create a miracle for this child to travel outside of Guyana for urgent medical treatment to help save his life.

Please join us by making a donation now and help save baby Rodas!

Updates: April 1, 2021
We have secured treatment for baby Rodas and we are currently working on his transfer. However, we are in great need of financial support to make his treatment possible. Please donate, invite your friends to donate, and share his story urgently!

Update: April 8, 2021
Rodas was safely transferred to a hospital in Suriname where he will be evaluated and subsequently undergo a PTCA Stent procedure. This procedure is imperative in buying time and saving his young life. He will need additional surgeries and further treatments in the coming months.

Update: April 21, 2021
Rodas successfully completed his initial treatment in Suriname and returned to Guyana. While this treatment was successful in getting him out of immediate danger and buy him time, his doctors has advised that he will need surgery within 6-12 months. Unfortunately, this surgery cannot be done in Guyana or Surinam. SHEA Charity will continue to advocate on Rodas’ behalf for international medical intervention.

Update: November 28, 2021

Rodas has his FIRST Tooth!

As exciting as this news is, we also would like to share the incredible news that Rodas has been accepted into the Pediatric Cardiology Program at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, Canada.

His treatment will be administered in two parts, several months apart. Accompanied by his mother, he will depart Guyana in the coming days and will be in treatment for approximately two months. He will then return to Guyana, until he is a few months older and able to have surgery. Once his doctors are confident he is ready for surgery, he will return to SickKids Hospital to complete the second, more complex surgery.

The road to this juncture was a challenging one, but we persevered and succeeded.

Please donate and help keep Rodas in treatment.

Update: December 24, 2021

Rodas has completed the first phase of this treatment at SickKids Hospital and is well on his way to a full and complete recovery. He will return home to Guyana on December 27, 2021, with plans to have the second phase of his treatment in the Summer of 2022.
